What is open policy and decision making and why is it important? Finnish open knowledge activist Raimo Muurinen tells us on the video what is broken in transparent decision making process nowadays and how to fix it.
Muurinen points out that a motivated citizen is the best expert in his own cause. That is why each citizen should have the opportunity to take part in the decision making process. He claims that decisions are now made in systems that hardly anyone but authorities and politicians have access to.
Muurinen says that physical or geographical distances are no longer a hindrance to decision making. Now the challenge is rather to find a time slot in our calendars that suits everyone. Online tools that are independent of time and place provide a good solution to this problem.
Muurinen also says that our current system is maybe too much based on speech. And whenever several people talk at the same time, it never promises anything good. But when online, several people can produce and consume written texts simultaneously.
