Participants’ view of the conference

1. Why did you register this conference?
2. Was the conference worthwhile?
3. What did you miss at the conference?

1. To update my knowledge with important issues within prior learning both in the Nordic region and in Europe. I have previously worked within this area and perhaps I will again in the future, because the Agency may be involved in the further development of the assessment of prior learning within the third sector in Finland.
2.  I got a good general overview of the situation within the assessment of prior learning. Furthermore, I gained insight into current issues in different countries and specific projects which are being implemented.
3. The schedule was fine and everything was very well-organised, I can’t think of anything I missed.

1. In my department we are right now engaging in discussions on validation with the local educational associations and organisations.
This was a very good occasion for getting re-introduced to a field that I have worked with before.
2. It was good inspiration and it did indeed put the issues in perspective. I was reminded that a lot of work already has been done, and we do not need to start from scratch in Odense Kommune.
3. Nothing at all
Michael Gravesen, Denmark, is working for Odense Kommune (municipal authority in one of the large cities in Denmark).

1. As it has been said in this conference Austria – like Germany – is somewhat behind in developing and implementing recognition of prior learning. And our laws are very restricted in this area.
At the same time the Chamber of Commerce is offering courses in the Eastern and Central European countries. In these countries the educational level is very low, so there is a big need for recognising all competencies.
2. It was very interesting. Actually it was excellent. Not at minute wasted. Especially the first all-round presentations of recognition of non-formal learning.
Also I used the opportunity to meet and talk with people from the Finnish Adult Education Association, with whom we cooperate in some projects.
3. Nothing.
Erich Lifka, Austria, is working for the Austrian Chamber of Commerce

1. Vox is dealing with all areas of prior learning including the third sector. Furthermore I was asked to make a workshop presentation on the study of Vox regarding documentation of qualifications acquired within the third sector.
2. I think that especially the recommendations of the JAVAL-project were useful and concrete. It was also interesting to hear about the OECD study.
3. It had a small negative. The cases were presented in the workshops which meant we didn’t have the possibility to hear all of them.
Sigrun Røstad, Norway, senior counsellor of Vox, the Norwegian Institute for Adult Learning.

1. In connection with our courses preparing students for university, CIDEC works with recognition of prior learning.
2. Especially it was useful to hear how other people are working with recognition of prior learning.
We realised how different our conditions are compared to the Nordic countries. In Portugal we primarily deal with basic competencies. So we have to develop our own point of view.
3. Maybe a more radical view on the issue.  In my work I have people sitting right in front of my, so I would have liked more field oriented presentations. But I guess that it will be covered by the study tour after the conference.
Celia Pedrosa, Portugal, is working for CIDEC, a non-profit organisation offering students qualifying courses to university admission.

1. Mr. Henrik Smedmark (also attending the conference) and I are coordinating a project called Valiwood. The objective is to validate vocational knowledge, competencies and skills in the wood and furniture sector. Hence the attendence at the conference from our side.
2. Definitely. As a whole the conference gave us an informative perspective of the work of other countries in the area of validating informal knowledge and skills. It also gave us the insight in how one can structure this work.
3. Nothing. From our part the conference was interesting and informative.
Katia Westerlund, Sweden, is legal advisor for The Swedish Federation of Wood and Furniture Industries.

1. We have been involved into and worked together with our partners from Baltic and Nordic countries in JAVAL Project.
Today labour market changes so fast that people have to be more flexible and ready to learn all life. Nowadays we can acquire knowledge not only in formal education institutions but in non formal too.
It is an important issue in our country because we have not a strict validation system in adult education in Latvia yet. It means that we must propose a system for validation of knowledge that people gain in non-formal way.
It was important to obtain new experience and knowledge on this issue; therefore I registered for this conference.
2. In my opinion - yes. I met very many colleagues and we could share and discuss our opinions and discussed in non-formal atmosphere. These minds of meetings are always successful. All the presentations were valuable.
3. I would like to say great thanks to our Danish colleagues and JAVAL team for very well done job. The conference was well organized. I would have liked more creative work in groups – shorter presentations, more discussions; it is my suggestion for next conferences.
