3 Utdanning – kultur – natur

Det islandske prosjektet Biophilia education er ett eksempel på innovative samarbeidsformer mellom forskjellige områder i samfunnet, som for eksempel utdanningssystemet, kulturinstitusjoner, naturvitenskaplige forskningsinstitusjoner og foreninger på grasrotnivå.

Nye arbeidsmetoder som brukes på konferansen integrerer Biophilia erfaringer, hvor kreativitet er en forutsetning for forskning. Metoden brukes for å forbedre samarbeidet mellom vitenskap, kultur og utdanning. Metoden knyttes til nyere forskning og forskningsbasert utviklingsarbeid, og i arbeidsprosessen integreres kunst, naturvitenskap, voksenpedagogikk og ikt/media.

What Biophilia is: 

  • an artistic product 
  • a business venture, and a brand name
  • technological and ideological pioneering 
  • a merger of art and science in a personal and artistic way
  • inspiration for exploring new ways of teaching and learning

What Biophilia apps are not:

  • pedagogically developed educational apps for teaching either music or science

Could Biophilia apps and workshops inspire adult learning?

YES, they

point out a new way of learning, help seeing out of the box, take one away of conventional structures, 

  • encourage adults to act as artists, and diminish the inhibitions of adults,
  • give the participant a feeling of power,and  enhance the learning of anything,
  • are a fun way for starting things,
  • offer a framework for teachers and students, and colleagues of different diciplines to learn together,
  • offer a proactive method for pushing teachers to new way of teaching, and to crossing their comfort zone boundaries,
  • inspire artists to get more involved in education,
  • are not based on competition but on integration, which is a good starting point for adult learning.

Biolphilia could and should lead to something more beyond it, and inspire further combinations of different subjects, arts, and diciplines in teaching and learning.

BUT, they

  • require teachers who are able to do it in a new way 
  • are quite complicated – are we able to manage it? (a toolkit for teachers is provided, a two day further education for teachers has bee arranged by the University of Iceland), 
  • have to be applied individually into each context/case

Which subjects in adult education would be enhanced through the use Biophilia apps?

  • a new way of starting to use and learn of new technology 
  • are a good way of getting teaher students interested in science teaching   

The near future of the Biophilia project: Nordic collaboration in the next couple of years to follow; experiences collected, improvements might be done.

Sesjon 3A: 

Workshopen vil gi en fordypet innsikt i Biofilia-metoden med eksempler på hvordan den kan utvikles og brukes i voksnes læring. Metoden innebærer kreativitet som forskningsmetode og styrker samarbeid mellom vitenskap, kultur og utdanning. I tillegg vil det være en dialog om hvordan liknende tverrsektorielle erfaringer kanbrukes innenfor voksnes læring.

Theoretical introduction: Helga Rut Guðmundsdóttir

Helga Rut Gudmundsdottir is Assistant Professor at the University of Iceland, School of Education and chair of the music, drama and dance division. Helga holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Music Education from McGill University, and graduated as a music teacher from Iceland University of Education. Helga is founder and director of the Iceland Center for Music Research which encourages interdisciplinary music research in Iceland through scholarly meetings. She is actively involved in the education of music teachers and researchers in the Nordic countries through the networks Nordic Network in Music Education and Nordic Network for Music Education Research. She hosted the 17th conference of the Nordic Music Education Network in Reykjavik, 2012. She has twice been awarded full-time sabbatical leaves from the University of Iceland. In 2006-7 she was Visiting Professor at McGill University and in 2013-2014 she was Visiting Professor at the University of Montreal as well as Invited Scholar at the International laboratories for Brain Music and Sound Research in Montreal.

Helga's research has been in music perception, music reading and musical development. She is on the steering committee of AIRS (Advancing Interdisciplinary Research in Singing) as the leader for Theme 2 (Singing and Eudcation) as well as leader for Sub-theme 2.1 (Learning to sing naturally) and is involved in the 1.3 Sub-theme through developing the AIRS Test Battery of Singing Skills for Children. Her research has been supported by the Icelandic Center for Research, the University of Iceland Research Fund, the Icelandic Ministry of Culture and Education, and AIRS student funding. Helga has presented her research at numerous international conferences and published her work in peer reviewed journals such as the Icelandic Journal of Education, Journal of Research in Music Education, the International Journal of Music Education and Music Education Research.

The Biophilia App as an inspirational artwork in adult education

Presentation summary:
Since the debut of Bjork's Biophilia album released in 2011, both as a record and an app, several Biophilia workshops have been held in various locations around the world. The workshops have been aimed a young children who learn about science and musical structures through the Biophilia apps as wells as through specially tailored workshops led by experts in music and science. However, the Biophilia workshops have not yet been applied to the teaching of adult populations. This talk will explore the possibilities that lie within the Biophilia app as an inspirational artwork and how it may be used in adult education. 


Presenter: Guðrún Jónsdóttir Bachmann

Guðrún Jónsdóttir Bachmann is the Manager of Public Science Communication Programmes at the University of Iceland (UI). She has a MSc degree in Science Communication from UWE in Bristol, UK.

Gudrun´s main projects at UI include outreach programmes such as the University of the Young, a annual summer school, and The University Train which tours Iceland with a lively, colourful science crew. One of her recent projects is The University Science Workshop, a small scale Science Centre. Gudrun supervises the participation of UI in public events such as The EC Researchers´ Night, Reykjavik Cultural night and The Childrens‘ Festival. She is National Organizer for the European Contest for Young Scientists.

Since 2011, Guðrún has been responsible for The University of Icelands´part in the Biophilia musical workshops and educational program, and has taken active part in their developments.  


Presenter: Auður Rán Þorgeirsdóttir

is a Project Manager at the Icelandic Ministry for Education, Science and Culture. She has a MSc degree in Cultural Management & Policy from Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh and worked at the Edinburgh International Book Festival after finishing her studies. After moving back to Iceland Auður worked for the Reykjavík City´s Department for Culture and Tourism; as events manager responsible for the organisation and planning of city festivals such as Culture Night and Winter Lights Festival and as as a point person and co-creator of Reykjavík´s submission to become a UNESCO City of Literature. Auður was the Administrative Director of the Reykjavík Arts Festival and was consequently hired by the Minsistry for Education, Science and Culture to manage the implementation of the Biophilia Education Project across the Nordic countries as part of Iceland´s Presidency in the Nordic Council of Ministers.
