A new law, in force since the beginning of 2018, assigns Finnish folkbildning the task of literacy and basic language education for immigrants. The new law creates a model intended to capitalize on the strengths of folkbildning: flexibility and versatility in delivery, methods and course duration. The Finnish folkbildning field delights in the more dependable, long-term resources accompanying the model but worries about the effects of the model on the freedom of folkbildning. This article takes a closer look at these hopes and anticipations and sheds light on the new integration training law and model.
