2WARdS Europe: Intergenerational and intercultural dialogue

EAEA GRUNDTVIG AWARD 2014. EAEA hands out the yearly EAEA Grundtvig Award to a successful European learning partnership. This year´s theme for the award was "Remembering World War I for the Future – Adult Education promoting Peace and Cohesion in Europe".

The article series spreads good practices by introducing the nominees of EAEA Grundtvig Award 2014.

2WARdS Europe was a project about sharing the words of senior citizens through a dialogue with younger generations. The project was developed locally and on a partnership level and can be defined as an intergenerational and intercultural dialogue. The aim of the project was to build up a learning process on 'Wars and conflicts in Europe', resulting in the transmission of lived stories. The project competed in the category "Adult education projects that promote peace and conflict resolution".

Innovative and creative way to reflect

The project brought together 11 partners from 10 countries to express their personal reflections using storytelling, images, local research, artistic approaches and other instruments to get results and to build outcomes in a participatory way on the following main topics:

  • Conflicts and wars in European countries experienced (included two world wars) in the last 100 years;
  • The wish to go "towards" a more shared and accepted European citizenship.

The second part of the project was to learn about methods for innovative and creative learning processes on intergenerational work. The themes addressed are the destructive impacts of regional, national and international wars, but also the actual problems caused by racism, extremism and discrimination.

2WARds Europe goes on!

Since the partnership at the European level was very heterogenic, the local impact differed from partner to partner. For the majority of the partners the impact on their own organisation and working area was very high, therefore the concept of 2WARdS Europe will also continue to be developed by a similar project, the LLP "Towards Peace" (2013-2015).
