Background information about LEK project

Writing about adult education, making it interesting and accessible, is a skill. The LEK project has developed a Curriculum aimed at developing these skills through a set of training modules. The Curriculum is available free of charge and can be used by adult education organisations, freelancers, media staff, and others interested in improving their competence. The Curriculum “Public Relations and Journalism for Adult Educators” includes 6 steps to make adult education more visible in the media. The curriculum is being tested in several European countries during 2017-2018. This seminar is one of the multiplier events following up on the testing process before the finalisation of the Curriculum.

Basic understanding of the curriculum

Adult education is a public task which includes empowering the disadvantaged and supporting a higher level of basic literacy, numeracy and ICT skills throughout society.

To help accomplish these goals adult education needs to be visible also in mainstream media. A public awareness is an important factor in creating change. Many media professionals do not know enough about adult education to cover the field in an efficient way. At the same time, many within adult education do not know how to talk to media, how to tell their story, how to reach out to audiences, or how media works.

Public relations is not simply about the marketing of products. It is also about producing public awareness of a topic and creating a positive image of an institution. PR can also be a supporting service for journalists.

The curriculum is designed as a framework for specific circumstances such as training programmes on a national level; the national offers themselves have to be planned and prepared individually – with a focus on domestic issues. The offers can refer to local reality and can integrate European aspects as well. When determining a selection of modules, the choice should contain both comprehension and training of skills.

Regarding the content, the curriculum follows a two-step approach:

(1.) Understanding the professional methods of journalism leads to

(2.) better public relation activities in adult education.
